The Arctic Ocean Expedition

February–April

The Arctic Ocean Expedition takes you from Ruka through Finnish Lapland to Northern Norway. Over five riding days, we travel through snow-covered forests, frozen lake landscapes and remote northern villages, staying in different locations along the way.

Each guest rides their own snowmobile, accompanied by an experienced guide. A support vehicle transports the luggage, while accommodation and meals are arranged throughout the journey. The route continues through the Suomu, Luosto or Pyhä, Saariselkä and Sevettijärvi regions. Depending on the confirmed route and permits, the final crossing into Norway takes place by snowmobile

The eight-day journey ends in the Neiden and Kirkenes area, where a king crab experience and crab meal introduce you to the flavours of the Arctic coast.

Day 1 – Arrival in Ruka

Welcome to Finland! We meet you at Kuusamo Airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Ruka.

After check-in, we enjoy a welcome dinner and introduce the expedition, the route and the days ahead. Depending on your arrival time, we may also fit your winter equipment this evening.

Day 2 – Ruka to Suomu

After breakfast, we fit our winter equipment and get familiar with the snowmobiles. Our guide provides a safety briefing and riding practice before we begin our journey towards Suomu.

We ride through snow-covered forests and frozen lake landscapes, stopping for lunch along the way. Our support vehicle transports the luggage to our next accommodation.

In the evening, we enjoy dinner and stay overnight in the Suomu area.

Day 3 – Suomu to Luosto or Pyhä

Today, our journey continues towards the fell landscapes of Luosto or Pyhä. We follow the confirmed snowmobile route, taking breaks to enjoy the scenery and stopping for lunch along the way.

After a day of riding, we settle into our accommodation and enjoy dinner. Overnight accommodation will be in the Luosto or Pyhä area, depending on availability and the final route.

Day 4 – Luosto or Pyhä to Saariselkä

After breakfast, we continue north towards Saariselkä. This is expected to be one of the longest riding stages of the expedition, with lunch and rest stops along the way.

Dinner and overnight accommodation await us in Saariselkä.

Day 5 – Saariselkä to the Sevettijärvi Area

Our journey continues towards the Lake Inari and Sevettijärvi region. The day’s route follows suitable trails and ice crossings.

We stop for lunch along the way before reaching our accommodation in the Sevettijärvi area. In the evening, we enjoy dinner and relax after another day on the trail.

Day 6 – Into Northern Norway

On our final riding day, we head towards the Norwegian border and our destination in Neiden.

Crossing the border by snowmobile is subject to a permitted and confirmed route.

Dinner and overnight accommodation are arranged in Neiden.

Day 7 – King Crab Experience

Today, we leave the snowmobiles behind and discover a different side of the Arctic with a king crab experience in the Kirkenes region.

The activity includes a crab meal, with time afterwards to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Our team takes care of collecting the snowmobiles.

In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner and our final overnight stay in Neiden.

Day 8 – Departure from Kirkenes

After breakfast, we transfer you to Kirkenes Airport according to your flight schedule.

The expedition comes to an end after a week of snowmobiling, northern landscapes and shared experiences.

Do I need to book the snowmobile trip in advance?

Yes. We recommend booking well in advance, as both snowmobiles and guides may also be booked for other tours. Booking early ensures your place on your preferred trip.

I have snowmobiling experience but no experience in mountain riding. Can I still join the trip?

Yes! During the trip, we will practise mountain snowmobiling techniques together, and our guides will help each participant develop their skills and take on new challenges at their own level.

Can I arrange a carpool with other participants?

Yes! After signing up, you will receive a link to a WhatsApp group where you can connect with other participants and arrange a carpool to Björkliden.

What if the weather is bad?

The trip will also operate in challenging winter mountain conditions. We always plan each day’s route and riding activities with safety as our top priority.

How is safety taken into account?

Our guides have years of experience and extensive knowledge of the area. They use offline maps and GPS navigation to ensure safe route planning and navigation in the mountains. Weather conditions and avalanche forecasts are monitored closely throughout the trip.

Avalanche safety procedures are practised together with the group on the first riding day. Each participant is provided with personal avalanche safety equipment, including a transceiver, probe and shovel.

Our guides are also trained in first aid and hold at least EA2-level (advanced first aid) training or equivalent.
